Learning and Development for Life Direction

L&D for LD

Russ Davis (2018)

Learning and Development are a systematic process aimed at enhancing employees’ skills, knowledge, and competency, resulting in improved work performance. It serves as a core function within organizations, playing a vital role in attracting and retaining talent, enriching company culture, and engaging employees.

The term ‘Learning and Development’ (L&D) has largely replaced that of ‘human resource development’ (HRD), at least for practitioners (Harrison, 2009)

Learning

Learning focuses on the acquisition of knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes that lead to better job performance. Learning occurs through various activities such as seminars, conferences, hands-on experimentation, and reading articles or books. It expands an individual’s viewpoint and knowledge base for immediate use in their current role.

Development

Development aims to broaden and deepen knowledge in line with an individual’s long-term professional goals. Development involves activities like leadership training, mentoring, coaching, job shadowing, and stretch assignments. It helps employees grow job-related abilities, expanding their potential for new opportunities in the future. Development is typically something an employee chooses to pursue rather than being mandatory.

Difference Between Learning and Training

Learning is the process of absorbing and retaining information over time, expanding one’s knowledge base.

Training: Specific instruction for acquiring immediately applicable knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to a particular job or task. Training can take place on-site, off-site, or online and is often aimed at groups of employees.

The Strategic Role of Learning and Development

One of L&D’s primary responsibilities is to manage the development of people—and to do so in a way that supports other key business priorities. L&D’s strategic role spans five areas. (Brassey et al., 2019)
